ALASKA - Skagway

Thanks to postcrosser Paul for the Skagway town.  In his card, writes, 'this is a typical street scene.  My town thrives on tourism and in the summer we can received up to 15,000 visitors a day! Strange for a town with only 850 residents!'.  I guess in a small town like this everyone knows everybody, loves this kinda community..

"Skagway is a first-class borough in Alaska on the Alaska Panhandle. As of the 2010 census, the population was 920. Estimates put the 2014 population at 1,012 people. The population doubles in the summer tourist season in order to deal with more than 900,000 visitors. It was formerly a city (urban Skagway located at 59°27′30″N 135°18′50″W) first incorporated in 1900 that was re-incorporated as a borough on June 25, 2007.

The port of Skagway is a popular stop for cruise ships, and the tourist trade is a big part of the business of Skagway. The White Pass and Yukon Route narrow gauge railroad, part of the area's mining past, is now in operation purely for the tourist trade and runs throughout the summer months."

TRISTAN DA CUNHA

Today, the card that I ordered from Tristan Da Cunha post office finally arrived. Postmarked on 25 June 2015 and arrived on 5 August 2015, it didn't take long to reach me. I am happy to check off  British overseas territory from my missing list as territory #147.

"Tristan da Cunha, colloquially Tristan, is both a remote group of volcanic islands in the south Atlantic Ocean and the main island of that group. It is the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world, lying 2,000 kilometres  from the nearest inhabited land, Saint Helena, 2,400 kilometres  from the nearest continental land, South Africa, and 3,360 kilometres from South America. The territory consists of the main island, also named Tristan da Cunha, which has a north-south length of 11.27 kilometres and has an area of 98 square kilometres, along with the smaller, uninhabited Nightingale Islands and the wildlife reserves of Inaccessible and Gough Islands.

Tristan da Cunha is part of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. This includes Saint Helena and equatorial Ascension Island some 3,730 kilometres to the north of Tristan. The island has a population of 259 as of July 2015."

TRISTAN DA CUNHA - Settlement of Edinburgh

And this second card shows Tristan Da Cunha Settlement; Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, Potato Patches, Welcome sign & 1961 Volcano.

"Tristan da Cunha is an archipelago of five islands in the southern Atlantic Ocean, the largest of which is the island of Tristan da Cunha itself and the second-largest the remote bird haven Gough Island. It forms part of a wider territory called Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha which includes Saint Helena and Ascension Island.

This archipelago, 2500 km)from the continents of Africa and South America, is one of the most remote inhabited places on earth and was a stopping port or shelter for journeys from Europe to the Far East."

RUSSIA - The Novodevichy Convent

Thanks to postcrosser Tanya for the card of Novodevichy Convent (New Convent of the Virgin) Founded in 1524.

The Novodevichy Convent, Russia

"The Novodevichy Convent was founded in 1524 to celebrate the taking of Smolensk from Lithuania, an important step in Moscow’s conquest of the old Kyivan Rus lands. The oldest and most dominant building in the grounds is the white Smolensk Cathedral, with a sumptuous interior covered in 16th-century frescoes. Novodevichy is a functioning monastery. Women are advised to cover their heads and shoulders when entering the churches, while men should wear long pants.

From early on, the ‘New Maidens’ Convent’ was a place for women from noble families to retire – some more willingly than others. The convent’s most famous residents included Irina Godunova (wife of Feodor I and sister of Boris Godunov), Sofia Alexeyevna (half-sister of Peter the Great), and Eudoxia Lopukhina (first wife of Peter the Great)."

ESTONIA - 12 Beautiful View from TALLINN

Another card from Sava from his trip to Estonia.  It is really beautiful city.  Thanks Sava for sharing the view with me.

"Tallinn, Estonia’s capital on the Baltic Sea, is the country’s cultural hub. It retains its walled, cobblestoned Old Town, home to cafes and shops, as well as Kiek in de Kök, a 15th-century defensive tower. Its Estonian History Museum is dedicated to the country's 20th-century history, and its Gothic, towering Town Hall is among the Baltic region's oldest."

SLOVAKIA - Banska Stiavnica

Thanks to Danci for the swap.

"Banská Štiavnica is a town in central Slovakia, in the middle of an immense caldera created by the collapse of an ancient volcano. For its size, the caldera is known as Štiavnica Mountains. Banská Štiavnica has a population of more than 10,000. It's a completely preserved mederal town. Because of their historical value, the town and its surroundings were proclaimed by the UNESCO to be a World Heritage Site on December 11, 1993."

Thanks to postcrosser Svetlana for the card.

ITALY - Grado

Andrea sent this card from the Grado city on her holiday.  Thanks Andrea for the thought..

"Grado is a historic seaside town located on a lagoon island along Italy's north-east Adriatic coast, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. The town, which has a population of 9,000, is in the Province of Gorizia and is very near the head of the Adriatic Sea. It is frequently described as a northern relative to Venice; at one time it was the more important of the two towns. Like Venice, Grado was populated as the inhabitants of mainland Roman settlements fled into the lagoons to escape successive invasions. After the sixth-century fall of the Roman city of Aquileia, an important early centre of Christianity, Grado became the seat of the Patriarch or Archbishop who was reponsible for the Adriatic lagoon islands and for Istria."
