The Sami inhabited the area known as the Saami Earth (North Sámi Sápmi). It consists of Norway , Sweden and Finland in the northern parts, as well as the Kola Peninsula .  Estimates of the number of the Sámi range from 50 000 to 100 000."

The municipality covers an area of 18.05 square kilometres, and has a population of 652 (as at 3 July 2006). Heršpice lies approximately 19 kilometres south of Vyškov, 25 km south-east of Brno, and 211 km south-east of Prague."
