"Douglas is the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man, with a population of 27,938 people. It is located at the mouth of the River Douglas, and on a sweeping bay of two miles."


RUSSIA - The Pogost in Kizhi

"Kizhi Pogost (Russian: Кижский Погост) is a historical site dating from the 17th century on Kizhi island. The island is located on Lake Onega in the Republic of Karelia (Medvezhyegorsky District), Russia. The pogost is the area inside a fence which includes two large wooden churches (the 22-dome Transfiguration Church and the 9-dome Intercession Church) and a bell-tower. The pogost is famous for its beauty and longevity, despite that it is built exclusively of wood. In 1990, it was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites and in 1993 listed as a Russian Cultural Heritage site."

USA - Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado

"Mesa Verde National Park is a National Park and World Heritage Site located in Montezuma County, Colorado. It protects some of the best preserved Ancestral Puebloan archeological sites in the United States.

The park was created by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. It occupies 52,485 acres (21,240 ha) near the Four Corners region of the American Southwest, and with more than 4,300 sites, including 600 cliff dwellings, it is the largest archeological preserve in the US. Mesa Verde (Spanish for "green table") is best known for structures such as Cliff Palace, thought to be the largest cliff dwelling in North America."

GERMANY - Greetsiel Habour ,East Frisia

Greetsiel is situated on the Leybucht, a small bay on the East Frisian coast. Over time, large parts of the bay were reclaimed behind dykes, so that Greetsiel is the only port in the bay today.  Thanks to Kristria for the card.

Porvoo is one of the six medieval towns in Finland, first mentioned as a city in texts from 14th century. Porvoo is the seat of the Swedish-speaking Diocese of Borgå of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland."


UKRAINE - St Mykola Church-Lighthouse

Did you know.... that the only church-lighthouse in memory of lost by waters and travelers is located on the southern coast of Crimea, in Ukraine.  The church laid on a high slope over the sea ca be seen from many parts of the peninsula.  Thanks to postcrosser Bogdon for the card.


"The church-lighthouse, begun in 2004, was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, patron saint of sailors in 2007. The town is on the shore of the Black Sea, along the Belaya River. The church-lighthouse was built as a memorial to the victims of sea catastrophe. It includes a museum of such disasters in the crypt and there is a memorial wall with nameplates for those who died in the sea. The main icon is made of a half million knitted knots, without any silver or gold. It took a year and a half and the actor who made the icon was almost completely paralyzed when he started. Doctors had advised him to strengthen his hand by knitting. When the icon was completed he was almost completely healed."

It is South Africa's third-largest protected area, spanning 280 km of coastline, from the Mozambican border in the north to Mapelane south of the Lake St. Lucia estuary, and made up of around 3,280 km2 of natural ecosystems, managed by the iSimangaliso Authority."
