The Atayal word for Atayal is tayal, meaning "human" or "man."

INDONESIA - Faces of Balinese

PAPUA NEW GUINEA - Goroka

Goroka - Eastern Highlands Province. Asaro Mudmen. Thanks to my boss for sending this card from his business trip.

"The Asaro Mudmen come from just outside the village of Goroka in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea.

The mudmen could not cover their faces because legends say that the people of Papua New Guinea thought that the mud from the Asaro river was poisonous. So instead of covering their faces with this alleged poison, they made masks from pebbles that they heated and water from the waterfall."

The Sami inhabited the area known as the Saami Earth (North Sámi Sápmi). USA - Mescalero Apache Camp

Located in the mountains of New Mexico the Mescalero's population was reduced in number to 500 as a result of many years of conflict and injustice created by the Spaniards and U.S. Western movement. Camps such as the one pictured were not permanent but seasonal.

MALACCA - Nyonya Memories

Thanks to Connie for card showing Nyonya culture in Malacca. Nyonya is Chinese descendants who adopt local culture and way of living and speak local language in their daily life.

"Peranakan Chinese or Straits-born Chinese are the descendants of Chinese immigrants who came to the Malay archipelago including British Malaya (now Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, where they are also referred to as Baba-Nyonya) and Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia; where they're also referred as Kiau-Seng) between the 15th and 17th centuries.

 Members of this community in Malaysia address themselves as "Baba Nyonya". Nyonya is the term for the women and Baba for the men. It applies especially to the Han populations of the British Straits Settlements of Malaya and the Dutch-controlled island of Java and other locations, who have adopted Nusantara customs — partially or in full — to be somewhat assimilated into the local communities. Many were the elites of Singapore, more loyal to the British than to China. Most have lived for generations along the straits of Malacca. They were usually traders, the middleman of the British and the Chinese, or the Chinese and Malays, or vice versa because they were mostly English educated."

ETHIOPIA - Coffee Ceremony, Fasil Castle and Nyangatom Tribe

Coffee Ceremony (Ethiopia)

A coffee ceremony is a ritualised form of making and drinking coffee. The coffee ceremony is one of the most recognizable parts of Ethiopian culture. Coffee is offered when visiting friends, during festivities, or as a daily staple of life. If coffee is politely declined then most likely tea (shai) will be served.

17th Century Imperial Fasile Castle (Gonder)

Fasil Ghebbi is located in the Amhara National Regional State, in North Gondar Administrative Zone of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the fortress-city of Fasil Ghebbi was the residence of the Ethiopian emperor Fasilides and his successors. Surrounded by a 900-m-long wall, the city contains palaces, churches, monasteries and unique public and private buildings marked by Hindu and Arab influences, subsequently transformed by the Baroque style brought to Gondar by the Jesuit missionaries. Southern Ethiopia Gnangatom

The Nyangatom tribe women wear a lot of different beads on their necks, which they never ever take off. As a young girl, she gets her first strand of beads as a gift from her father and for all the years of her life she adds more and more. Sometimes you can see a woman who wears up to 6-8 kg of beads! Source

TANZANIA - Maasai's dancing, Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

Abir second card shows the Maasai's dancing.  She wrotes that, "Tanzania mainland is full of rich cultures, tribes and traditions.  Scientists have proven that the beginning of mankind and life of the universe all started here! One of the world's oldest tribes are the Masai, a nilotic ethnic group of semi-nomadic people. They are fierce warriors who have preserved their customs and traditions as well as language."

NAMIBIA - Old Bushmen Woman/San Tribe

Thanks to Georine for the swap. The card said; "Bushman woman, precious colorful adornments contrast with wrinkled skin." and this card  reminds me of the movie, 'God must be Crazy'..

DAGESTAN - Traditional costume

"The Republic of Dagestan (/dɑːɡɨˈstɑːn/ or /ˈdæɡɨstæn/; Russian: Респу́блика Дагеста́н, Respublika Dagestan; also spelled Daghestan) is a federal subject (a republic) of Russia, located in the North Caucasus region. Its capital and largest city is Makhachkala, located at the center of Dagestan on the Caspian Sea.

With a population of 2,910,249, Dagestan is ethnically very diverse (it is Russia's most heterogeneous republic, where no ethnicity forms a majority) with several dozen ethnicities and subgroups inhabiting the republic, most of which speak Caucasian and Turkic languages. Largest among these ethnicities are the Avar, Dargin, Kumyk, Lezgian, Laks, Azerbaijani, Tabasaran and Chechen. Ethnic Russians comprise about 3.6% of Dagestan's total population."

CYPRUS - Nicosia

Lefkosa (Nicosia) has been the capital of Cyprus since the late Byzantine period (11th century).  It antiquity it was known by name Ledra. The city centre, the old 'Chora', surrounded by 16th century walls. with museums, old churches and medieval buildings.

BHUTAN - Traditional Zhey Performer
