"The Hornby Lighthouse at South Head was built by public demand after the tragic shipwrecks of the Dunbar and the Catherine Adamson

The light was opened by Sir William Denison, Governor of New South Wales, in 1858. It was named after the family of Governor Dennison’s wife, whose father became Admiral Sir Phipps Hornby, Commander in Chief of the British Pacific Fleet in the 1860s. However it was known as the Lower Light to distinguish it from the nearby Macquarie Light, New South Wales’ first." Read more interesting history here.

UKRAINE - St Mykola Church-Lighthouse

Did you know.... that the only church-lighthouse in memory of lost by waters and travelers is located on the southern coast of Crimea, in Ukraine.  The church laid on a high slope over the sea ca be seen from many parts of the peninsula.  Thanks to postcrosser Bogdon for the card.

"The church-lighthouse, begun in 2004, was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, patron saint of sailors in 2007. The town is on the shore of the Black Sea, along the Belaya River. The church-lighthouse was built as a memorial to the victims of sea catastrophe. It includes a museum of such disasters in the crypt and there is a memorial wall with nameplates for those who died in the sea. The main icon is made of a half million knitted knots, without any silver or gold. It took a year and a half and the actor who made the icon was almost completely paralyzed when he started. Doctors had advised him to strengthen his hand by knitting. When the icon was completed he was almost completely healed."

MAINE - Spring Point Ledge Light 1879

Spring Point Ledge Light, 1879 was converted from kerosene to electricity in 1934. Thanks to postcrosser Sue for the card.

"Spring Point Ledge Light is a sparkplug lighthouse in South Portland, Maine that marks a dangerous obstruction on the west side of the main shipping channel into Portland Harbor. It is now adjacent to the campus of Southern Maine Community College.
The lighthouse was constructed in 1897 by the government after seven steamship companies stated that many of their vessels ran aground on Spring Point Ledge."

MARYLAND - Cove Point Lighthouse, Calvery Country

"The Cove Point Light is a lighthouse located on the west side of the Chesapeake Bay. This light was built in 1828 by John Donahoo, who erected a brick conical tower along the plan he had used at several other sites in the Bay."

WASHINGTON - Fort Canby Lighthouse, Ilwaco

"Cape Disappointment State Park (formerly Fort Canby State Park) is a 1,882-acre camping park on the Long Beach Peninsula, fronted by the Pacific Ocean. The park offers 27 miles of ocean beach, two lighthouses, an interpretive center and hiking trails. Visitors enjoy beachcombing and exploring the area's rich natural and cultural history. The nearby coastal towns of Ilwaco and Long Beach feature special events and festivals spring through fall. The park offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, Columbia River, North Head Lighthouse and Cape Disappointment Lighthouse. The park has old-growth forest, lakes, freshwater and saltwater marshes, as well as streams and tidelands along the ocean."

WASHINGTON - Cape Disappointment Lighthouse

"The Cape Disappointment Light is a lighthouse on Cape Disappointment near the mouth of the Columbia River in the U.S. state of Washington." Find more info here.

The area got the name from a fur trader named John Meares. He saw the headland and tried to cross over the bar into the Columbia River. When he missed, he named the area Cape Disappointment. Given that the Columbia River is the second longest river in the US at over 1200 miles long. By the time the current reaches the Pacific, it crashes creating a hazardous bar that mariners must cross. Due to this fact, the area has become known as the Graveyard of the Pacific. Originally, locals cut the tops of trees and used a white flag to create a daymark. At night they would set trees on fire to mark the entrance. By 1848, the Government agreed that a lighthouse was needed, but it would still be almost another eight years before a lighthouse was built."

JERSEY - Corbiere Lighthouse

New addition to my lighthouse collection! Thanks Sabrina for the swap.

"La Corbière (Jèrriais: La Corbiéthe) is the extreme south-western point of Jersey in St. Brelade. The name means "a place where crows gather", deriving from the word corbîn meaning crow. However, seagulls have long since displaced the crows from their coastal nesting sites.

The rocks and extreme tidal variation around this stretch of Jersey's coast have been treacherous for navigation and La Corbière has been the scene of many shipwrecks, including that of the mail packet "Express" on 20 September 1859."

CALIFORNIA - Pigeon Point Lighthouse, Pescadero

What a lovely surprise to received an envelope from postrcrosser Melissa.  It really makes my day! She sent these lovely lighthouse, old U.S. FDC of Yellowstone and some United Nations in New York city stamps.  Thank you so much Melissa.

The description on the back of the card:

"Pigeon Point Lighthouse open in 1872 and was considered a major landmark on the hazardous voyage between Monterey Bay and San Francisco.  Its 115-foot (35 m.) tower is one of the tallest on the Pacific Coast.  It is shown at the anniversary lightning of its original first order Fresnel lens, comprised of 1,008 prisms."

ISLE OF WIGHT - St Catherine's Lighhouse

St Catherine's Lighthouse, Niton, I.W., my 3rd card from Isle of Wight.

"St. Catherine's Lighthouse is one of the oldest lighthouse locations in Great Britain. The first lighthouse was established on St. Catherine's Point in 1323 on the orders of the Pope, after a ship ran aground nearby and its cargo was either lost or plundered. Once part of St. Catherine's Oratory, its octagonal stone tower can still be seen today to the west of Niton at the foot of the Undercliff. It is known locally as the "Pepperpot"

GERMANY - Nordseeheilbad-und Schwefelbad, St Peter-Ording

"Sankt Peter-Ording is a municipality in the district of North Friesland in Schleswig-Holstein . It is the only German seaside resort of its own source of sulfur and therefore is called "Nordseeheil- and sulfur".

LITHUANIA - Vente Cape Lighthouse

A new addition to my lighthouse collection, thanks to Raimonda a Lithuania postcrosser for the card.

"Ventė Cape is a headland in Nemunas Delta, located in Šilutė district, Lithuania. It is known as a rest place for many birds during their migrations, particularly the autumn migration. One of the first bird ringing stations in Europe, still in operation, was opened here by Tadas Ivanauskas in 1929.

The Cape, being in the former Memel Territory, was part of Germany until 1919. The Teutonic Knights erected a castle here, called Windenburg, but it no longer exists. There is an 11-metre-high lighthouse, built in 1863 during the Prussian period, though currently it is not in use."

"Lange Jaap ("Long James"), also known as Kijkduin Light or Den Helder Light, is an active lighthouse near fort Kijkduin in Huisduinen, Netherlands. At a height of 182 feet (55 m) it is one of the tallest "traditional lighthouse" in the world. For almost a century, from 1878 to 1974, it was the tallest lighthouse in the Netherlands, until the construction of Maasvlakte Light." WIKI
