PHILIPPINES - Rizal Park

"Rizal Park (Filipino: Liwasang Rizal, Spanish: Parque Rizal), also known as Luneta Park or simply Luneta, is a historical urban park in the Philippines. Located along Roxas Boulevard, Manila, adjacent to the old walled city of Intramuros, it is one of the largest urban parks in Asia. It has been a favorite leisure spot, and is frequented on Sundays and national holidays. Rizal Park is one of the major tourist attractions of Manila. 

Situated by the Manila Bay, it is an important site in Philippine history. The execution of national hero José Rizal on December 30, 1896 fanned the flames of the 1896 Philippine Revolution against the Kingdom of Spain. The area was officially renamed Rizal Park in his honor, and the monument enshrining his remains serves as the park's symbolic focal point. The Declaration of Philippine Independence from the United States was held here on July 4, 1946 as were later political rallies including those of Ferdinand Marcos and Corazon Aquino in 1986 that culminated in the EDSA Revolution."

PHILIPPINES - Boracay Island

Thanks to Nina for the card.  In her card she wrote 'for now, Boracay is inaccessible because of an ongoing goverment rehabilitation rpoject to deal with illegal sewage pumps and pipes that lead to the sea.  Boracay will re-open by November this year.'

"Boracay is a small island in the Philippines located approximately 315 kilometres south of Manila and 2 kilometres  off the northwest tip of Panay Island in Western Visayas region of the Philippines. Boracay Island and its beaches have received awards from numerous travel publications and agencies. The island comprises the barangays of Manoc-Manoc, Balabag, and Yapak in the municipality of Malay, in Aklan Province. The island is administered by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority and the provincial government of Aklan. Apart from its white sand beaches, Boracay is also famous for being one of the world's top destinations for relaxation. As of 2013 it was emerging among the top destinations for tranquility and nightlife."

PHILIPPINES - Barasoain Church

Barasoain Church (also known as Our Lady of  Mt. Carmel Parish) is a Roman Catholic church built in 1630 in Malolos City. Bulacan. Having earned the  title as the Cradle of Democracy in the East,, the most important religious building in the Philippines, and the site of the First Philippine Republic, the church is proverbial for its historical importance among Filipinos.  Founded by Augustinian Missionaries in 1859, the church is also renowned for its architectural design and internal adornments. The original church was burned during the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution however it was renovated.

PHILIPPINES - Viva Vigan Festival

Viva Vigan Festival, Vigan Ilocos Sur, 28th April - 7th May. Thanks Ana for the card.

"The Viva Vigan Festival of Arts is celebrated during the first week of the month of May. It was started in 1993 by the Save Vigan Ancestral Homes Association, Inc. (SVAHAI) to promote awareness of the value of the historic town, which was hoped to strengthen resolve to preserve and protect this heritage site. For the past sixteen years, the festival of arts has been successful in drumming up attention for Vigan’s ancestral houses. With the help of national and local agencies, as well as media, arts and non-governmental supporters, the festival has also succeeded in promoting other aspects of Vigan. Its popularity has even benefited the whole tourism industry of the northern region, bringing in tens of thousands of local and foreign tourists curious to explore and have a “northern experience."

PHILIPPINES - The Banaue Rice Terraces

The Banaue Rice Terraces are considered as 2,000 year old terraces that were whittled into the mountains of Ifugao Province in the Philippines Cordilleras by ancestors of the Batad native people.  Considered as "Eight Wonder of the World", these fields are stretching like steeping stones to the sky, which are situated about 1,500 meters above sea level and cover 4,000 square miles of mountainside.  The Rice Terrace Fields has been built largely by hand with hand tools and animal power.  They are feed by an ancient irrigation system from the rainforests above the terraces.

PHILIPPINES - Underground Cemetery. Nagcarlan, Laguna

"The Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery (Filipino: Libingan sa Ilalim ng Lupa ng Nagcarlan) is a national historical landmark and museum in Barangay Bambang, Nagcarlan, Laguna supervised by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. It was built in 1845 under the supervision of Franciscan priest, Fr. Vicente Velloc as a public burial site and its underground crypt exclusively for Spanish friars, prominent town citizens and members of elite Catholic families. It is dubbed as the only underground cemetery in the country."

PHILIPPINES - San Juan Bautista Church

This postcard shows San Juan Bautista Church, Tabaco city in Albay. The construction of the church was started in 1864 and was completed in 1879. The stones on the church walls bear the noticeable mark of the mansion who built the church. This church was named a national landmarks on August 1, 1993. Thanks to Nathalie for the card.

PHILIPPINES - Legaspi City Church and Mayon Volcano

"Mayon Volcano, also known as Mount Mayon, is an active volcano in the province of Albay, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Renowned as the "perfect cone" because of its almost symmetric conical shape, the mountain was declared a national park and a protected landscape on July 20, 1938, the first in the country. It was reclassified a Natural Park and renamed Mayon Volcano Natural Park in the year 2000."

"Manila is the capital and second largest city of the Philippines. It is one of the sixteen cities which, along with the municipality of Pateros, make up Metro Manila, the National Capital Region, whose overall population is around 12 million. The city of Manila is located on the eastern shore of Manila Bay and is bordered by the cities of Navotas and Caloocan to the north; Quezon City and San Juan to the northeast; Mandaluyong to the east; Makati to the southeast, and Pasay to the south. It has a total population of 1,652,171 according to the 2010 census."
