CHINA - Childhood on Loess Plateau

"Loess Plateau, Chinese (Pinyin) Huangtu Gaoyuan or (Wade-Giles romanization) Huang-t’u Kao-yüan, highland area in north-central China, covering much of Shanxi, northern Henan, Shaanxi, and eastern Gansu provinces and the middle part of the Huang He (Yellow River) basin. Averaging about 4,000 feet (1,200 metres) in elevation and covering some 154,000 square miles (400,000 square km), it is the world’s largest loess plateau. The region is overlain by a mantle of fine-grained, wind-deposited, yellowish alluvium known as loess, which is also carried in suspension by the Huang He. The loess layers average 165–260 feet (50–80 metres) in thickness and mask the detailed relief of the underlying surfaces. The loess is highly subject to erosion because of sparse vegetation, heavy precipitation in summer, and gullying."

CHINA - Wanrong, last empress of Qing Dynasty

The woman in the photo named Wanrong. She was the last empress of Qing Dynasty. In 1922, at the age of 16, she married Puyi.

"Empress Wan-Rong (13 November 1906 - 20 June 1946), was the last Empress Consort of the Qing Dynasty in China, and later Empress of Manchukuo (also known as the Manchurian Empire). Tortured by opium, she died in the Prison of Yanji alone." Read more here.

"The Yongzheng Emperor (13 December 1678 – 8 October 1735), born Yinzhen, was the fifth Emperor of the Qing dynasty, and the third Qing emperor to rule over China proper, reigned from 1722 to 1735. A hard-working ruler, the Yongzheng Emperor's main goal was to create an effective government at minimal expense. Like his father, the Kangxi Emperor, the Yongzheng Emperor used military force to preserve the dynasty's position. His reign was known for being despotic, efficient, and vigorous."

“A Hakka walled village is a large multi-family communal living structure that is designed to be easily defensible. This building style is unique to the Hakka people found in southern China. Walled villages are typically designed for defensive purposes and consist of one entrance and no windows at the ground level.

These houses, sometimes called tulou 土楼, were often round in shape and internally divided into many compartments for food storage, living quarters, ancestral temple, armoury etc.”

CHINA - Warring States period

Bronze wide vessel, zun and companion water vessel, pan Warring States period.

Overall height: 41.6cm, height of Zun: 30.1cm, rim diameter: 25cm.

The whoel set was casting with a total of eight-four ling-dragons and eighty chi-dragons. Each vessel is cast witha seven-character Zenghouyi inscription. Made by the lost-wax method, these two companion vessels have the finest and most complex detail of all the brozes from the tomb of Zenghouyi and of any bronze vessel prior to the Qin Dynasty.

"Six Harmonies Pagoda, also known as Liuhe Pagoda, is found on Yuelun Hill in Hangzhou on the northern bank of Qiantang River. Its name references the 6 Buddhist ordinances, namely heaven, earth, north, south, east, and west. Its history dates back more than 1100 years to the year 970 in the Northern Song Dynasty when the king of the Wuyue State wanted to show his mortal authority by conquering the Qiantang River’s evil tidal bore. The pagoda also once served as a lighthouse due to its strategic location right next to the Qiantang River."

Xitang (Chinese: 西塘) is a historic town in Jiashan County, Zhejiang, China. It borders Luxu Town in the north, Yaozhuang Town in the east, Ganyao Town in the southeast, and Tianning Town and Town in the west. As of the 2016 census it had a population of 57,400 and an area of 83.61-square-kilometre. Xitang is a water town crisscrossed by nine rivers. The town stretches across eight sections, linked by old-fashioned stone bridges. In the older parts of town, the buildings are set along the banks of the canals, which serve as the main transportation thoroughfares in the area.
