GERMANY - Schweriner Schloss in Mecklenburg

Thanks to Merle for the card.

The Schwerin Castle is on Castle Island in the center of Schwerin . Today it is the seat of the Landtag of the north German state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern . For many centuries it was the residence of the Mecklenburg dukes and grand dukes . It is the most famous and magnificent of more than two thousand castles and mansions in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern .

The castle is a historically grown building in a thousand-year process. Its ring-shaped shape dates back to a fortress of a Slavic castle built around 965 on a small island near Lake Schwerin . The transformation phases of this building complex through the centuries are comprehensively documented from around 1500 by a wealth of written and pictorial evidence.
