The castle is a historically grown building in a thousand-year process. Its ring-shaped shape dates back to a fortress of a Slavic castle built around 965 on a small island near Lake Schwerin . The transformation phases of this building complex through the centuries are comprehensively documented from around 1500 by a wealth of written and pictorial evidence.
